The Gostner Schwaige

The quiet, fine alpine hut.

Where people like to rest on their way, the inner and the outer one. Food and drink prepared with a calm hand and a sensitive nose.

Right in the middle! The Seiser Alm, with its wide meadows, patches of forest, mountain paths and summit trails, is a special place in every season. And the Gostner Schwaige sits right in the middle of it. Thank you, we are staying!

Alpine huts called Schwaige have existed across the Alps since the Middle Ages. On a Schwaige, mostly home-made products are processed and served. It is the same with us. We just do it a little differently.

Everything is already here! We only have to open our eyes and recognise the gifts nature gives us. There is a lot to see, to feel, to taste. Here you come very close to the South Tyrolean soul.

Our alpine kitchen

Culinary delight and peace of mind

Those who hike or ski need to eat. And drink and rest. Here is how it works with us: dishes we create ourselves, with flowers and herbs we pick ourselves, cooked and served by us.

The taste of the alp straight onto the plate, that is how it should be. And that is how it tastes: refined, homey, unusual and special. With good ingredients, as is usual on a Schwaige mostly from our own production, and creatively inspired by the surrounding meadows.

Hay flower soup in a bread crock

Our well-known soup, made from 15 different meadow herbs that we pick in summer. Its season is winter.

Kaiserschmarren

Butter, eggs and flour are available all year round. Enough for the ultimate alpine comfort meal.

Flower salad

Regional, traditional and touched by curiosity. The flowers and herbs grow in the large garden at the Aussergost farm.

The kitchen year

We cook only what is growing right now or what can be preserved.

  1. SummerWe pick the meadow herbs and flowers.
  2. WinterNow the hay flower soup in a bread crock is in season.
  3. All yearButter, eggs and flour: Kaiserschmarren.
Flower salad: some people shook their heads. Before the meal. Afterwards they were thrilled.
Franz Mulser
As a child I was often out in the forest and the mountains with my grandfather. He taught me everything one can eat. He had learned it the hard way after the war, when he had to hide in the mountains.

The farm and mountain cheese dairy

What milk can do.

Of course we make the best cheese! We have been practising for a while. And we have the best partners: our good cows.

The mountain air plays its part: our cheese dairy at the Gostner Schwaige lies at 1,900 metres directly beneath the Schlern in the Dolomites. We turn our alpine milk into:

  1. 01Yogurtvarious kinds
  2. 02Mountain cheese
  3. 03Tyrolean grey cheese
  4. 04Petal cheese
  5. 05Alpine saffron cream cheese
  6. 06Edelweiss cheesea Camembert

It tastes best as a Marende, after a long hike, on a bench in front of the Gostner Schwaige.

Marende: a snack, a light cold meal with bacon, sausage, cheese, pickled gherkins, sometimes eggs, tomatoes and bread.

Cooking classes

Cooking like Franz. Or something very like it.

Which flowers can you eat and which should you leave? Which work well in salads and soups? And how do you compose a dish that makes the palate dance? For everyone who loves what sun and earth let grow, our summer cooking classes are the place to be.

Farm shop

A treat for your home.

We are do-it-yourselfers. We process everything our farm has to offer: press, dry, pickle, cook, steam, bake. Syrup, fruit spreads, chutney, cheese, tea and flower blends and much more can come home with you.

Guided visits

Farm and alp tours.

Our guests, small and large, are welcome to watch us at the daily work in the barn. There are tours of the alpine cheese dairy, and if you are interested we are happy to show you around the farm.

Day after day I cook with true joy for my guests. I am still amazed at how tasty and beautiful the flowers and herbs are that I find up here.

Celebrating on the alp

Glinting, splendid and unique.

Your wedding, so close to the sky. Your birthday, at the highest level. A reunion with family, friends and companions. Celebrate whatever there is to celebrate: life, love, friendship.

The hut has space for groups of different sizes. In summer we also like to celebrate outside on the meadow. And if you want to celebrate elsewhere, we offer a catering service.

We cook fresh, fine and with a lot of love, and prepare the best alpine breakfast in the world or everything for a Marende on the meadow. It is best if we sit down together and talk.

According to regulations, at least 80 % of the products of a Schwaige have to be self-made or local. We follow this rule out of conviction.

Accommodation for your guests: four new holiday apartments await at the Aussergosthof. To the Aussergost farm

The alp through the year

Summer, sun, Seiser Alm. Winter, bliss, Seiser Alm.

Summer

There is no way around it: out of the deckchair and into the hiking boots. Take the first step, then the next.

From the Aussergost in Seis and from the Gostner Schwaige on the Seiser Alm the options are plentiful: for walkers, hikers, mountain companions, climbers. The area is also wonderful for cyclists of every level, although honestly it is never quite flat.

Whoever comes down with a few kilometres in the legs and a belly full of hay flower soup or rhubarb strudel may still like to splash into the Völser Weiher lake or the Telfen pool near Kastelruth.

The Mulser family

Get to know us!

Both feet firmly on the ground, with a strong bond to tradition, but please with lightness and openness to the new. That is how we see ourselves, that is how we want to be.

  1. 17th c.The farm is first mentioned in records as Aussergost. For more than 500 years it has been a closed hereditary farm in the Mulser family.
  2. BeforeThe farmers first ran a wine business, then moved on to livestock and to growing and processing fruit and grain.
  3. Late 1980sAt the Aussergost the family concentrates more and more on holiday guests: renting apartments and cooking.
  4. Late 1990sAfter apprenticeships at the Tantris in Munich, the Ca’s Puers in Soller on Mallorca and with the Obauer brothers in Werfen, Franz opens the Gostner Schwaige on the Seiser Alm.

Franz and Petra and the parents Michl and Julla work together to keep the offer distinctive and unique: the Gostner Schwaige with its renowned alpine cuisine and the Aussergost with its four holiday apartments. And with the two charming and spirited daughters, the next generation is already in the starting blocks.

The four women

The four holiday apartments at the farm are dedicated to four women who lived here over the last 200 years: Julla, Gertl, Barbl and Thres. A lot of their strength, wisdom and kindness lives in the walls of the farm.
